The Department of Foreign Language Education currently runs four language teaching programs: English, French, German and Arabic Language Teaching. The duration of education at these programs is 5 years, including one-year preparatory class. The main objective of these programs is to equip the students with advanced knowledge in the target language. The pedagogical courses also help students transfer their learning experience into teaching environment. Each program provides students with the opportunity to deal with their interests in any branch of art as well as to learn a second foreign language. In addition, students can select different courses from different departments according to their interests. At the end of the program, they obtain a bachelor’s degree. The department was founded in 1984. İt is necessary to complete preparatory class successfully or pass the exemption exam in order to start BA program. The aim of this program, which has about 150 students, is to equip students with Arabic linguistics, literature and language teaching as well as to provide them with a qualification of teaching at primary and secondary schools.Graduates from this program become Arabic teachers. In addition, they can work in different ministries such as Ministry of Culture and Tourism or Foreign Affairs, and other state or private institutions.Both M.A. and Ph. D. programs are carried out in accordance with the regulations of the Institute of Educational Sciences.
Gazi Institute of Education English Language Teaching Department was founded by Hadiye Sayron in 1944. At this time, the education programme offered at the department lasted two years. In 1966, some regulations were made both within academic staff and within education programme. Moreover, the period of instruction was extended to three years. In 1982, the department became affiliated with Gazi University Gazi Education Faculty. Education given at the department was extended to five years; a period comprised of one year of preparatory class and four years of studying specialized field subjects. From that time until today, nearly 4000 teachers of English have graduated from Gazi ELT Department. Each year, English Language Teaching Department accepts approximately 150 students. Students graduating from the department can serve as teachers of English at all schools (both at primary and secondary levels) governed by Ministry of National Education. They also have the chance to work as instructors at the preparatory schools of universities. Beside these, students attending English Language Teaching Department have the options like working as translators and interpreters at private and official institutions.
Students have the right to attend European universities, which have an Erasmus exchange programme agreement with Gazi English Language Teaching Department. The universities with which Gazi English Language Teaching Department has a bilateral agreement are located in Spain, Denmark and Portugal. English Language Teaching Department offers M.A and Ph.D. programmes as well.
The department started service as Gazi Institute of Education French Department in 1941. The program just offers regular classes. Students who complete preparatory class successfully at Foreign Language Education Centre are entitled to attend 4-year BA programme. The graduates can work as French teachers at state or private schools. They can also work at French departments of official institutions (Ministry of Foreign affairs, Ministry of Culture, TRT French Service, Prime Ministry, General Directorate of Prime Ministry Archive, Turkish Armed Forces and General Directorate of Foundations) as translators or specialists.
Moreover, they can find a job as translators and/or specialists in tourism industry(eg, Air Transportation companies, hotels and etc.), in different import-export services within private companies and holdings, at private companies providing translation service, Directorate of Press and Information and various private broadcast channels. It is also possible for them to work at embassies or get a job as academics at different universities.
It offers education for about 250 students. Both M.A. and Ph.D. programs are carried out in accordance with the regulations of the Institute of Educational Sciences. The aim of this department is to equip students with German linguistics, literature and language teaching as well as providing them with a qualification of teaching at primary and secondary schools. Besides, graduate students are provided with opportunity to engage in research activities. Students are required to complete the preparatory class successfully or pass the exemption exam in order to start BA program.
